Lumentum Holdings Inc., a global leader in optical and photonic solutions for cloud and networking applications, today announced plans to establish a new U.S. manufacturing facility in Greensboro. The company plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the project over the next several years, while preserving and creating more than 400 jobs, further strengthening the region’s leadership in advanced manufacturing and next-generation technology.

The 240,000-square-foot facility will manufacture advanced indium phosphide-based optical devices that serve as critical components in the world’s largest artificial intelligence data centers. The Greensboro site, acquired from Qorvo, was selected for its skilled workforce, strong infrastructure, and the collaborative support of state and local economic development partners

The facility is currently operational and will be retrofitted to produce Lumentum’s indium phosphide-based optical products, including continuous wave (CW) and ultra-high-power (UHP) lasers. The purchase agreement includes the transfer of an experienced workforce, allowing the company to accelerate production ramp-up and scale manufacturing efficiently.

“Greensboro offers the combination of workforce talent, infrastructure, and collaborative leadership that enables advanced manufacturers to scale quickly,” said Michael Hurlston, Chief Executive Officer of Lumentum. “This facility significantly expands our indium phosphide manufacturing capacity and strengthens our ability to support customers building the infrastructure that will define the next era of computing.”

By expanding its domestic manufacturing footprint, Lumentum is strengthening supply chain resilience while supporting the growing demand for high-performance optical technologies used in hyperscale cloud and AI infrastructure networks.

Over the next several years, the company plans to hire fabrication process and equipment engineers, manufacturing technicians, operations professionals, supply chain specialists, quality engineers, and corporate functions, including IT, human resources, and finance.

"Lumentum’s decision to invest in Greensboro signals that our city is competing and winning in the industries shaping the future of the global economy,” said Marikay Abuzuaiter, Mayor of Greensboro. “Advanced manufacturing tied to smart technology infrastructure represents the next frontier of innovation, and Greensboro has the talent and collaborative leadership that companies need to grow. We are proud that Lumentum has chosen our community as a place to build, invest, and create high-quality careers.”

“Lumentum’s investment in Guilford County strengthens our position as a critical hub in the global semiconductor and advanced manufacturing supply chain,” said Skip Alston, Chairman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners. “The creation of high-quality jobs and the continued growth of our technology sector represent a major win for our residents and for the long-term prosperity of our region.”

“The Greensboro business community understands that global competitiveness is built through partnership,” said Geoff Foster, Board Chair of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce. “Lumentum’s decision to invest here reinforces the Triad’s reputation as a place where innovative companies can find talent, infrastructure, and leadership aligned around long-term economic success.”

Production at the facility is expected to ramp up in mid-2028 as the company expands its manufacturing capacity using six-inch indium phosphide wafers to support next-generation AI data center technologies.

The Guilford County Economic Development Alliance, comprised of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and the High Point Economic Development Corporation, collaborated with the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, City of Greensboro, Guilford County, Duke Energy, Guilford Technical Community College, Guilford Works, Piedmont Natural Gas, and North Carolina A&T State University to support Lumentum’s investment in Guilford County.
